Pharmacies can play key role in diabetes prevention

BY DENISE DAWSON: Early diabetes prevention is key to controlling the diabetes epidemic and there is a specific role community pharmacists can play in reaching and educating patients, according to a presentation at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores-Total Store Expo conference held in San Diego.

Brooke Hudspeth, PharmD, CDE, with The Kroger Company explained how her company is participating in the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program, the aim of which is to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 in the general population, while also improving general health. (read more)


New study questions accuracy of mHealth devices for diabetes

BY ERIC WICKLUND: An independent study of 18 popular mHealth sensors used by people with diabetes finds that two-thirds aren’t meeting standards for accuracy, potentially putting those users at risk.

The analysis of 18 FDA-approved blood glucose monitoring systems (BGMSs) by the Diabetes Technology Society found that only six meters recorded blood glucose levels within 15 percent of mg/dl of the laboratory value in at least 95 percent of the tests. In layman’s terms, this means a person with diabetes can be confident that a blood glucose reading is accurate 19 times out of 20. (read more)

New tool identifies diabetes patients at risk for severe hypoglycemia

BY NN&I STAFF: A team led by Kaiser Permanente researchers has developed and validated a tool for identifying diabetes patients who are at the highest risk for being admitted to an emergency department or hospital due to severe hypoglycemia. Their results are published Aug. 21 in JAMA Internal Medicine..

The researchers developed the hypoglycemia risk stratification tool by identifying 156 possible risk factors for hypoglycemia and collecting data from more than 200,000 patients with type 2 diabetes receiving care from Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. Using machine-learning analytical techniques, they developed a model to predict a patient’s 12-month risk of hypoglycemia-related emergency department or hospital use. (read more)
